House of Cards will be showing in more platforms this year with Viacom’s Paramount Channel Latin America paying TV rights for the series. Along with the show is another Netflix hit, Orange is the New Black.
Both titles are award-winning series and including them in the channel’s programming will allow the shows to reach a wider audience. According to Variety, Paramount Brand Manager Federico Cuervo explained that they wanted to include television programs this year.
Paramount has been into movie programs since it was launched two years ago. Part of their new strategy is to begin having TV series around. In line with this, Cuervo believes that the interest for TV shows has grown a lot.
The TV channel also believes that not all their 25 million subscribers have seen the shows. Cuervo cited online piracy as the potential cause as to why there is low TV subscription in Latin America. He added, though, that if shows were broadcast in a more accessible way, audience will respond.

Moreover, it seems like the network has lots of expectations and future plans for both shows ahead. Worldscreen’s TV Latina reported more on Cuervo’s statements:
“We are proud to be able to expand our content offering with these renowned series that will undoubtedly connect with our audiences across the region. With the successful track record of the two properties globally, both these acquisitions and other exclusive premieres that will soon reach the channel strengthen our commitment to continue providing high-quality iconic programming to our viewers.”
Paramount Channel has a known history for contracting as media sponsors in several festivals. Both in 2015 and last year, the network covered Los Cabos Int’l Film Festival. They were also the ones covering the Morelia Int’l Film Festival last year in Mexico.
Orange is the New Black airs in April. On the other hand, political drama House of Cards will debut in March.
