The Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder analyzed his final episode of the series, which he directed with his wife Nikki Reed by his side. The series’ final midseason return was an “ode to Season 1,” Somerhalder said.
The Vampire Diaries Star Ian Somerhalder on His Final Episode as Director
According to Somerhalder, directing the episode titled We Have History Together, was an opportunity to revisit Season 1 and Season 2. These two seasons, he said, were his favorites. He said that the episode was fun because they could keep it simple.
“The early seasons, Season 1 and Season 2, were my favorite time of storytelling in the show, so I was grateful to direct this episode, which is an ode to Season 1,” Somerhalder said, the MTV News quoted. He added that the episode is all about two cameras and the actors and is completely performance-oriented. It is a simple storyline without too much complexities. He did not need to blow up cars and kill people.
The Salvatore brothers are on a killing spree, switching off their humanity for Cade. The brothers enter a support group, in which the members share their innermost selves with strangers, which help them to heal. However, Stefan and Damon are not there to heal the damages. They showed up only to collect a few bad souls for their new master.
Somerhalder said that over the episode, Damon questions his brother’s commitment to their mission. The actor added that he and co-star Paul Wesley spend so much time together that they do not have to speak to know what the other is thinking.
According to Somerhalder, Matt also shone in the episode. Somerhalder also noted that the bonding between him and his father is beautiful to watch.
