The This is Us finale failed to reveal what caused Jack’s demise and disappointed fans for not crying for the NBC show.
Many were expecting that more tears will drop in the This is Us finale since the cast have been teasing for a total tear-jerker ending for weeks now. Most are anticipating that the finale will be heavier and will really “destroy America” than its previous episode. However, it seems like the show fell short on this aspect.
Moreover, some are also disappointed when the show failed to reveal what most fans are waiting for – how did Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) die, Washington Post noted. The finale was heartbreaking as it is, but avoiding the big revelation seems like more painful for the cult following of the show.
Social media sites were flooded with upset posts about the finale. Most say they are more devastated that the cause of Jack’s demise was not revealed than knowing that the character will be dead soon.
Some fans said this is the first time in the series that they got disappointed for not weeping. One Twitter user wrote:
“I’ve never felt so disappointed to not cry… how did the most emotional show pull off the most anticlimactic finale?”
The This is Us finale story revolved around how Jack and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) first met and how their marriage would possibly end two decades later. The Pearson kids were also featured and fans had a glimpse of their plans.
Randall (Sterling K. Brown) told Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) that he wants to adopt a child. Kevin (Justin Hartley) is auditioning for a Ron Howard film. His ex-wife, Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge), supports him all the way. Finally, Kate (Chrissy Metz) plans to pursue a singing career like her mother.
This is Us Finale Recap
Drunk Jack drove to Cleveland to see Rebecca’s show. He made it to the bar but Rebecca was out after her bandmate and ex, Ben, tried to kiss her.
As she called home to tell her husband that she missed him, Jack was already inside at the bar. He went on the backstage to talk to Rebecca but got into an argument with Ben instead. When Rebecca came back, Jack is being pulled off Ben after punching him several times.
Rebecca decided to leave the show minutes before the band was set to perform. She and Jack drove home in near silence. At home, the two had a huge fight.
Rebecca told Jack that she had been a stay-at-home mother instead of pursuing her dreams. Jack in return told her that singing in bars is not actually a career.
As Jack headed toward the door, he reminded her that they still love each other. Rebecca asked Jack what he loved about her, but Papa Pearson didn’t have an answer. Rebecca then told him:
“The next time you tell me you love me, make sure you’re not just doing it out of habit.”
In the morning, Rebecca suggested to her husband to stay with his best friend Miguel (Jon Huertas) for the meantime. Jack agreed, but not before he delivered his heart-melting “why I love you” speech.
