Tyra Banks is stepping in as the new host of America’s Got Talent, replacing Nick Cannon.
AGT veteran judge Howie Mandel made the announcement via social media. Executive producer and judge Simon Cowell also welcomes Banks to the show.
Mandel also teased his new co-star by saying Banks could now teach him how to smize. The AGT judge was referring to Banks’ catchphrase in America’s Next Top Model which means smile with your eyes.
Banks acknowledged Mandel’s tweet and said she couldn’t wait to work with her new family on television. E! News cited the model’s statement wherein she said:
“I look forward to connecting with the dreamers, having fun and giving hugs and words of encouragement when needed. And maybe I’ll get one or two performers to smize for the audience!”
This is not the first hosting job for Banks. In fact, she has an extensive hosting portfolio. The veteran model hosted the America’s Next Top Model for 22 cycles in The CW.
Last year, the reality show moved to VH1 with a new host, British singer Rita Ora. However, Banks stayed on as executive producer.
Banks also served as an adviser in the previous season of The Celebrity Apprentice and co-hosted the FABLife talk show for a couple of months. The model has also won two Daytime Emmy awards for Outstanding Talk Show Informative for her The Tyra Banks Show.
Why Tyra Banks Replaces Nick Cannon in America’s Got Talent
The supermodel will host AGT season 12 after Cannon cut ties with the NBC. The rapper/actor announced last month that he would not return to the show after the network threatened to fire him over a racial joke he made during a stand-up performance.
In his Facebook post, Cannon slammed NBC’s decision to punish him for what he said in Showtime comedy special Stand Up, Don’t Shoot. He wrote:
“I find myself in a dark place having to make a decision that I wish I didn’t have to, but as a man, an artist, and a voice for my community I will not be silenced, controlled or treated like a piece of property. There is no amount of money worth my dignity or my integrity.”
America’s Got Talent season 12 would have marked Cannon’s eighth cycle as host. He began hosting the talent competition in season 4 in 2009.
AGT is expected start production soon and will return in NBC in summer. Judges Cowell, Heidi Klum, Mel B and Mandel will all return for season 12.
