Fans hoping for a Sherlock season 5 renewal may not be getting any news about the series soon. However, series lead Benedict Cumberbatch will return to BBC One for another TV event.

An exclusive report from Deadline revealed that the actor will team up with the network and Masterpiece for an adaptation of The Child in Time. The 1987 novel hails from award-winning author Ian McEwan.

McEwan’s masterpiece tells the story of protagonist Stephen Lewis. His life takes a downturn after he loses his three-year-old daughter.

Aside from serving as executive producer to the project, Cumberbatch also stars as the 90-minute drama’s lead. Speaking about the source material, Deadline quotes the actor in saying:

“I read the novel years ago and it stayed with me — profound, beautiful and very moving. Only Ian McEwan could write about loss with such telling honesty. We’re very excited to have Stephen Butchard’s subtle and brilliant adaptation, and in Julian Farino we have an extraordinary director who delivers emotional truth.”

At this point, no concrete timetable exists yet for the adaptation. However, with important names already attached, production could go on within the year.

Chances for a Sherlock Season 5

Fans of Sherlock hoping for more episodes of the series should hold back their expectations. Unlike the renewal of the show’s previous seasons, no assurances of moving forward were made this time around.

Even before Sherlock season 4 aired, rumors were already rife that the fourth one is the last one. Many attributed the possible ending to its two main actors’ busy schedules. Both Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman–who plays Dr. Watson–have major projects ahead of them.

Talks of the series ending also gained more credibility when even the actors and production members of the show expressed their doubts on more seasons. BBC itself did not offer a statement or official renewal about another season.

The Telegraph also relayed statements from creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. Both Moffat and Gatiss expressed that they do not know what lies ahead.

Still, the creators did not immediately shot down a potential season 5. Instead, they left it more open by saying that Sherlock Holmes’ story could continue years ahead.

For now, fans hoping for more of Sherlock should distract themselves with other things. One of the things they could consider is Thor: Ragnarok, where Cumberbatch reprises his role as Doctor Strange. Meanwhile, Freeman himself will make an appearance in the 2018 film Black Panther.
