Supernatural just finished airing its mid-season finale. The series, now in its 12th season, has certainly established a following. So while viewers wait for the new episodes in January, here is a recap of some of the most wicked, most evil villains that the show has ever seen.
Meg (first played by Nicki Aycox) entered the show in the episode Scarecrow of Supernatural Season 1. She was a foul-mouthed demon, the daughter of Azazel and was a serious threat to the Winchester brothers. After her first “meat suit” died when she was exorcised, Meg returned on Supernatural Season 8 (then played by Rachel Miner), only to die after being stabbed by Crowley in Goodbye Stranger.
Metatron was the Scribe of God, who viewers thought would be on the Winchesters’ side. All he needed to do was help the boys with the tablets, but he got greedy and wanted to have more godlike powers for his own. He casts all angels out of heaven, killing some of those angels he did not like. The most atrocious thing he did? He killed Dean in Supernatural Season 9, leading one of the Winchesters to become the Demon Dean.
A cute little girl cannot possibly do any harm to anybody — wrong! Lilith was in fact one of the greatest demon villains that the show has ever seen. She wanted to be the leader of the demons and ordered her minions to kill the boys so she can free the fallen angel Lucifer, her maker. After tormenting the brothers in seasons 3 and 4, Sam managed to kill this little pain in the neck — but not without dire consequences.
It seems that the Winchester brothers never ran out of villains wanting to take over the world, and Crowley was one of them. He was first a crossroad demon who became king of Hell. He was intelligent but manipulative and was able to make Dean cross over to the darker side — Team Hell.
Lucifer — the name itself evokes fear. He is after all the Devil. When Sam killed Lilith, the last seal was broken and Lucifer was freed from his prison. Then he managed to possess Sam and tried to bring forth the Apocalypse. From the Lucifer of past seasons up to Mark Pellegrino’s portrayal now in Supernatural Season 12, Lucifer continues to be a frightening and sinister character in the show.
Demon Dean makes the list not only for the abominable things he said or did as his demon self but also because he represented all that Dean, the human, was not. After Dean accepted the Mark of Cain from Cain himself in Season 9, it almost consumed him — changing him, making him addicted with his supernatural powers and bloodlust.
When he was killed by Metatron, the Mark resurrects him as a demon. He was later cured by Sam. And with the help of Crowley, Castiel and Rowena, the Mark was removed from Dean using the Book of the Damned.
Azazel can claim glory and say he started it all. He was the yellow-eyed demon who made baby Sam drink demon blood and led a horde of demons to bring about global destruction. And not to forget, he also killed Mary Winchester.
Azazel could very well be the best evil villain that the Supernatural series had ever seen. His powers included fire and dream manipulation, possession and teleportation. He also had superhuman strength and was immune to holy water. He single-handedly destroyed the Winchester brothers’ lives and was the one to be blamed for all Dean and Sam had to go through in life.
Supernatural Season 12 episodes return on Thursday, January 26, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
