Sherlock season 5 has not been renewed. However, Benedict Cumberbatch’s fans would not miss him for too long.
The actor landed a role in a new limited series, Melrose, in Showtime. Cumberbatch will portray Patrick Melrose, an aristocratic but despicably funny playboy who struggles to overcome the damage caused by an abusive father and a mother who condoned the behavior of his father.
The show tackles Melrose’s journey from a traumatic childhood through adult, substance abuse, and ultimately, toward recovery. The series is set in South of France in the 1960s, New York in the 1980s, and Britain in early 2000.
The five-part drama is based on the novels of Edward St. Aubyn. It is consists of Never Mind, Bad News, Some Hope, Mother’s Milk, and At Last. In 2012, the fourth part of the series was made into a featured film. Jack Devenport portrayed the lead role.
The limited TV series will start filming in New York, London, and in France in August 2017. David Nicholls is set to write the TV adaptation. Variety quoted Nicholls as saying:
“I’ve been a huge admirer of Edward St Aubyn’s novels for years, and can’t wait to bring these dark, witty, brilliant books to the screen. Benedict is the perfect Patrick Melrose.”
Aside from leading the cast, Cumberbatch will also serve as executive producer along with SunnyMarch partner Adam Ackland, Rachael Horovitz and Michael Jackson of Two Cities Television.
Sherlock Season 5 Update
Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss has admitted that he himself is not sure whether there will be a Sherlock season 5. Gatiss cited Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman’s tight schedule as the main reason for the possible non-renewal of the show. Cinema Blend quoted the showrunner as saying:
“I honestly don’t know if there will be any more. It’s incredibly difficult to get Benedict and Martin’s diaries to align. And obviously we left it in a very happy place… if that’s the end I’d be very happy where we left it.”
The two are currently involved in several TV series and movies including parts from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Cumberbatch appeared in Marvel’s Doctor Strange last year. He will reprise the role in Thor: Ragnarok this year.
Freeman, on the other hand, was in the blockbuster movie Captain America: Civil War last year. He is set to appear in the Black Panther movie in 2018.
Moreover, Cumberbatch also signed a deal to star and produce a 90-minute TV movie adaptation of Ian McEwan’s award-winning 1987 novel The Child In Time. Freeman’s Crackle, on the other hand, has been renewed for season 2 earlier this year.
