Showtime just hailed their new drama series The Chi along with two other shows. The series also welcomed writer and director Rick Famuyiwa. Actor Jason Mitchell will also be in the team.
The Chi was from Kapital Entertainment and Fox 21 TV Studios and was produced by creator Lena Waithe, Elwood Reid, Common, and Aaron Kaplan. It became a series when Famuyiwa came into the team.
Showtime’s new series is “a coming-of-age story that talks about a group in South Side of Chicago,” whose members deal with their own drama. It is also based on Waithe’s experiences of growing up in Chicago. The former also penned other series like Bones and Master of None.
The Chi Welcomes New Director
The original project was not able to have a series order but Showtime decided to give it a chance when Famuyiwa entered as the new director. The show’s former director was Clark Johnson.
Jason Mitchell Joins Cast
Mitchell is set to take the role of Brandon, a young man who aims to have his own restaurant. However, his family life conflicts with his career goals. As per the aforementioned source, he has to shoulder responsibilities for his mother and brother.
Before being included in the cast, Mitchell just finished filming for Detroit and Mudbound. These two series will appear in Sundance this 2017, Variety said in a report. Jason Mitchell is also set to appear in the movie Kong: Skull Island. The film is set to hit the big screens on March 10.
The series is just one of Showtime’s new series orders. The others include SMILF and Mating. Mating is also said to be a “hot prospect” for Showtime. It will be written by Mr. Robot actress Frankie Shaw.
The announcement of The Chi was made at the Television Critics Association press tour in California by Showtime Network CEO David Nevins. There has no other confirmation yet about the show’s final release date.
