Sherlock Season 4 premiered on CBS Masterpiece on the New Year’s Day and fetched 3.7 million viewers. The numbers have, reportedly, failed to reach the franchise record of 4 million viewers of the season 3 premiere three years ago.
According to the PBS, the season 4’s ratings gained a 7 percent hike over one-off special of last year, The Abominable Bride.
Sherlock Season 4 Returned, Ratings Falls Behind Previous Year’s Record
Sherlock Season 3 managed to draw 4 million viewers to its premiere episode The Empty Hearse that aired three years ago. It remains the show’s highest-rated episode so far. The series returned after a long hiatus, except for the one-off special The Abominable Bride that released January 1, 2016.
Although the ratings in the US dropped compared to the series’ last season, the picture is different in UK. Benedict Cumberbatch starrer The Six Thatchers was able to pull in a number of 8.1 million viewers. However, the catch is, the 90-minute starter fell short of about 300k from The Abominable Bride and 1.1 million from the last season, the Deadline reported.
According to PBS, The Six Thatchers was the no. 3 most social programs on the New Year’s Day on Facebook and Twitter. This was excluding all type of sports related programs.
Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss created Sherlock, being inspired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. The three episodes will continue with The Lying Detective, followed by The Final Problem.
The Possible Reasons for the Lower Ratings of Season 4 Premiere
One of the reasons for the drop in the ratings of the Season 4 premiere could be its air-date. It premiered on the New Year’s Day, which is a time not everybody is around watching their favorite TV shows.
Also, The Empty Hearse premiered three years back. Thus, less than 10 percent drop in the viewership in the era of DVR/ streaming is not unjustifiable. The Cartermatt reported that the majority of the shows that aired this year recorded around 15 percent drop in the ratings from the previous season.
Sherlock Season 4 episode 2 titled The Lying Detective will air on January 8.
