Good news for Shemar Moore fans! The actor has confirmed that he will return in the Criminal Minds season 12 finale.
Moore confirmed that he will reprise his role as FBI agent Derek Morgan in a post on Instagram. However, the actor is coming back in a guest appearance capacity only. This means Moore is not coming back for good.
Apparently, Morgan will come back to the BAU to lead in the case against the serial killer and escaped convict Mr. Scratch. In his Instagram post, Moore wrote:
“BOOM. My secret is out !!!! I’m excited to say…. Your Baby Boy will be back to play with my Criminal Minds family for the season 12 Finale!!”
Moore is one of the original cast members of the show. In March 2016, the actor announced that he will exit the CBS procedural after eleven seasons. His last appearance in the show was in season 11 episode 18.
Moore was written off after his character was kidnapped and tortured in an episode titled, Derek. Following his tragic experience, Derek decided to leave the BAU and focus with his life with wife Savannah Hayes (Rochelle Aytes).
Moore’s Criminal Minds season 12 episode is set to air on May 10.
Why Did Shemar Moore Leave Criminal Minds
Moore explained why he left the show saying he needed a break. In a March 2016 interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actor said he is not leaving to make more money but instead to just take a break.
The actor also teased that he might still show up in the series once again. Moore hinted that his final episode in Criminal Minds is not actually goodbye. The actor stressed at the time that Derek did not die in the show, hence the character can come back anytime. He told ET:
“Derek didn’t die, so anything is possible. When I come back, I’m going to come back guns blazing and excited and ready to perform and dance and, hopefully, the fans will enjoy what I’m doing.”
Meanwhile, Deadline also noted executive producer/showrunner Erica Messer’s explanation on Moore’s departure. She said the actor’s decision to leave the show is “to try new things.”
Moore’s exit was followed by the sudden departure of another series regular, Thomas Gibson (Agent Aaron Hotchner). Gibson was fired from the show after two episodes into the current season following a dispute with a series writer. It was previously rumored that Moore left the show because of the bad blood between him and Gibson.
Criminal Minds season 12 airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. in CBS.
