Long live the Queen! After four seasons, Reign will be bidding her subjects adieu. The CW has confirmed that Reign Season 4 will be the last one for the series.
The historical fantasy drama revolves around the life and loves of Mary, Queen of Scots. While the show is based on the Scottish queen, her life and certain historical events, it is also highly fictionalized. Showrunner Laurie McCarthy even described the show as designed for modern sensibilities, hence the use of modern music and costumes.
But as TV Series Finale reported, Reign Season 3 never quite clicked with the audience. They struggled to bring in the numbers. Season 1 had a 0.8 rating before falling to 0.4 in the second season. Meanwhile, Season 3 only had around 970,000 viewers and averaged just .30 in the 18-49 demo rating.
News of the cancellation came just as Reign Season 4 has commenced production. This means that the cast and crew have their work cut out for them as they try to wrap up Mary’s story. There had been rumblings that the show was getting the axe, so the producers had been discussing ways the series could end.
What Is Mary’s Fate in Reign Season 4?
At the end of Season 3, Mary has already returned to her native Scotland and is preparing to take the English throne. Meanwhile, Charles returned to the French court just as Bash left Mary to study with the druids. As for Elizabeth, her plan to marry Robery is thwarted when she discovered he had already married someone else.
The upcoming season is likely to focus on the war between the two queens, as well as Mary remarrying again. According to reports, Reign Season 4 will also introduce viewers to two new men in Mary’s life – Lord Darnley and Bothwell.
Fans can also expect to see new faces as the season will also showcase the Scottish royal court. Reign Season 4 is set to premiere on Feb. 10, 2017, Friday, at 9 p.m.
