Penny Dreadful bid a bittersweet goodbye to its fans in June. However, they still cannot let the show go. Even now, viewers are still clamoring for a spinoff or another season of the Victorian series. Is there hope for Penny Dreadful Season 4 of the show or even a spinoff?
There is no question that the British-American series was one of the more unique shows to ever grace the television landscape. John Logan weaved a masterful tale of faith and the struggle to hold on to it. This is in the journey of Vanessa Ives, a troubled young woman at the center of the series. The show also brought to life characters from classical literature like Dorian Gray, Victor Frankenstein, Mina Harker, Dracula and Abraham Van Helsing.
The show was not a ratings powerhouse like Game of Thrones, but Penny Dreadful was critically acclaimed and had a solid set of fans. The series was doing well and had even introduced several new characters in Penny Dreadful Season 3. This is why Vanessa’s death and the surprise confirmation that the series had ended came as such a shock to fans.
Can a Penny Dreadful Season 4 or Spinoff Happen?
Numerous petitions sprang up in the aftermath of Penny Dreadful’s series finale. As reported by Gamenguide, one petition called on Showtime to air another season to give justice to the other characters, while another entreated Netflix to pick up the show. Unfortunately, there has been no response to the requests.
A large number of fans are undoubtedly saddened and disappointed at the abrupt way the series ended. It did not help matters that Vanessa’s death came so suddenly and just as she was reunited with her love, Ethan.
But as John Logan explained, the show had to end with Vanessa regaining her faith and finding peace in death. It is a beautiful explanation but small comfort for those fans who desperately believe that Penny Dreadful still had a lot more stories to tell.
Furthermore, John Logan explained that the series already ended in Penny Dreadful Season 3. The season finale was aired on June 19, 2016, Sunday, on Showtime.
