Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox will be joining a new ABC comedy, few weeks after her other show was pulled off the air.

Cox will co-lead The Trustee comedy series from Warner Bros. TV, Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman’s production company. The actress will portray Amanda Jones, a larger-than-life ex-con, Variety noted. In the story, Amanda is finishing out her prison sentence by doing some tasks for the police department.

Meaghan Rath will be playing Eliza Radley, a stubborn detective who finds unlikely help from Amanda. The Walking Dead star Michael Cudlitz will play Captain Timothy Waits, a bad-mannered police captain who has learned to appreciate Eliza’s unconventional policing methods.

Sleepy Hollow alum Lance Gross has been tapped as well for a series regular role. Smurfs writers Jay Scherick and David Ronn wrote The Trustee pilot and will also serve as executive producers.

Cox recently starred in legal drama Doubt. CBS, however, pulled the show off the air after just two episodes. In the show, Cox played Cameron Wirth, a competitive lawyer. This made her the first trans actress that became a series regular on a broadcast show.

Orange is the New Black Star Laverne Cox on Season 5

Netflix released an OITNB season 5 teaser last month. In the sneak peek, some of the inmates were seen in different emotions following the death of Poussey (Samira Wiley).

Although Cox was not seen in the promo clip, she has been confirmed to return this season. The actress will reprise her role as Sophia Burset which gave her a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series in the Emmys.

Cox earlier teased that season 5 will be juicy and amazing for the female inmates of Litchfield Penitentiary. She also revealed in an earlier interview with People, that the entire season will happen in just three days.

“Next season happens in three days, all 13 episodes happen in a three-day period. So we are jamming a lot in. A lot happens in that period of three days,” she said.

The season 4 finale of the OITNB left a major cliffhanger. It ended with Daya pointing a gun on a guard. This left the viewers wondering if she will pull the trigger or not.

Daya’s dilemma all started when the inmates started a protest after Taystee (Danielle Brooks) heard that Joe Caputo (Nick Sandow) has no plan to punish prison guard Bayley (Alan Aisenberg). Bailey accidentally suffocated Poussey that caused her death.

Brooks also previously teased that season 5 will be intense. She added that war erupts in prison when OITNB returns in June.

Catch Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox and the rest of the cast when season 5 premieres on June 9 in Netflix.
