Netflix's Dark

The first teaser for Netflix series Dark has been unveiled. The clip definitely has a creepy feel in it.

The giant streaming service announced the new TV show at a press event in Berlin this week. It is Netflix’s first original series in the German language.

The Dark TV series focuses on the mysterious disappearance of children in the present day and sometime in the 80’s. Sounds familiar?  Indeed, it has some resemblance to the Netflix hit show Stranger Things. In fact, the series’ synopsis reads:

“A missing child sets four families on a frantic hunt for answers. Their search for a culprit unearths a small town’s sins and secrets.”

In Netflix series Dark, however, it seems like not only one kid has gone missing. According to Netflix, it is set in a German town in present day where two young children disappeared.

This exposes the fractured relationships among four families and their double lives.  The story will eventually have a surprising twist that ties back to the same town of Winden in 1986.

The series is in the German language but has English subtitles. A sneak peek for the upcoming new TV series shows worried parents and search parties looking for the missing children in the fields and in the forest.

The supernatural twist is hinted when a man says: “The question isn’t who kidnapped the children, but when.” Then a photo of some sort of triquetra symbol with the years 1953, 1986, and 2019 written on each loop is shown, which hints a possible time travel storyline.

The new Netflix series Dark consists of ten hour-long episodes. It is expected to have a winter premiere. It stars Louis Hofmann, Oliver Masucci and Jördis Triebel, among others.

Meanwhile, co-creator and director Baran Bo Odar revealed he had so much fun working with Netflix. He said the company gave them the complete creative control of the show.

According to CNET, the streaming company also let the Dark creative team cast the best actors in the country. Odar said:

“We had absolute creative freedom. We could cast whoever we wanted, the actors who fit best for the role. Netflix gave us a budget and a couple of notes and let us do it.”

More Netflix Series From Europe

More new shows are coming from other parts of Europe including Italy and Spain. According to Netflix, Dark is just part of a $1.75 billion-worth of new projects from the continent.

In addition to Dark, the company also launched an Italian crime thriller, titled Suburra and a 1920s drama from Spain called Las chicas del cable. Each series is the first Netflix original series produced in the country. Netflix already has a number of original productions from the UK, France, and Mexico.
