The Modern Family season 8 finale is almost here. However, its main cast members still have no new contracts to signify moving forward to another season.
This week marks the end of production for season 8 but there were no talks about the casts’ expiring contracts. Apparently, ABC and 20th Century Fox TV are fighting over the series’ costs. This appears as the cause for the delay in the signing of new contracts for the stars.
The Hollywood Reporter cited sources saying 20th Century Fox Television has yet to begin negotiating with Sofia Vergara (Gloria Pritchett), Julie Bowen (Claire Dunphy), Ty Burrell (Phil Dunphy), Jessie Tyler Ferguson (Mitchell Pritchett), Eric Stonestreet (Cameron Tucker), and Ed O’Neill (Jay Pritchett) for the next season. Although Modern Family has yet to be renewed for season 9, many are expecting that it will be given the show’s high ratings.
Prior to the season 4 debut in 2012, all six actors jointly sought for a salary bump. The negotiation did not go smoothly. The actors sued Fox TV to get out of their contracts, which they claimed violated California’s law.
In the end, the cast reached a deal with the studio that included back-end profits. In exchange, they agreed to add season 8 to their collective contracts. All of the six actors are making at least $350,000 per episode plus a cut of the series’ revenues.
Both ABC and 20th Century Fox Television have until mid-May to make a decision on whether to renew the Emmy-winning show and ink new deals with its stars.
