Fans of Disney’s newest leading lady may have appreciated every bit of the film’s final output. However, recent reports suggest that there could have been more content from the movie, including songs and a Moana deleted scene.
The Hollywood Reporter shares the deleted scene which showed Moana (Auli’i Cravalho) having six brothers. In the minute and a half-long clip, directors Ron Clements and John Musker explain the scene.
The rough sketches of the deleted scenario shows Moana in a canoe race with her brothers. While her siblings are competitive, she appears to dominate and proves that she’s the best at sailing among them.
Nevertheless, the scene and the brothers did not make the cut for the final movie because the directors wanted Moana as less proficient in sailing. Clements and Musker also agree that the protagonist seems happier as an only child.
True enough, both scenarios appeared to be the heart of the movie. Moana’s character development took center stage when she launched herself in a mission to find Maui (Dwayne Johnson). However without prior knowledge of sailing, she encountered a number of challenges along the way.
This emphasized the character’s strength and Moana’s stubbornness. In addition, being less proficient in sailing also allowed Maui to be an important mentor figure for Moana. By teaching her to sail, the demigod and the daughter’s chief formed a special bond.
The Significance of Sailing in the Film
Although the movie focused on Moana’s journey to find Maui, sailing has been an integral element of its progress. When she first ventured outside the reef, having zero knowledge in sailing almost cost Moana’s life.
Later, she gets lost at sea after encountering a typhoon wave. Another moment of weakness appears when Moana’s lack of sailing skills traps them in the hands of the Kakamora. The coconut pirates attack them for the heart of Te Fiti.
Nevertheless, Moana improves her skills later on. When Maui leaves her, she is able to escape Te Ka herself and venture towards Te Fiti.
Moana Deleted Scene and Other Easter Eggs
Aside from the Moana deleted scene, another thing that viewers may have been oblivious of is the film’s hidden Easter eggs. Glamour details that the movie had Aladdin references hidden.
In a video released by Disney, Auli’i Cravalho herself reveals some of these references. It turns out, two magical items from Aladdin make their way to the film.
The magic lamp appears in Tamatoa’s pile of treasures. Meanwhile, the magic carpet–made in tapa–makes an appearance while Moana wanders around their village.
Clements and Musker were also involved in the making of Aladdin, hence the references. What do you think of the Moana deleted scene and Easter eggs? Let us know your thoughts below.
