Miss Universe 2016 candidates walked down the red carpet for the Governor’s Ball held at the SMX Convention Center, last January 16. Considered as one of the most glamorous events prior to the Miss Universe 2016 coronation night, the contestants for this year’s pageant were joined by previous beauty queens, sponsors, as well as partners.
Miss Universe 2016 Contestants Dress Up For Governor’s Ball
According to a report from Rappler, the Governor’s Ball is a traditional fundraising event where sponsors and partners support the charities of Miss Universe. One of the sponsors at the Governor’s Ball is Ilocos Sur governor Chavit Singson. Other sponsors also include Okada Manila, Solar Entertainment Inc., and SM Lifestyle. Also, present in the Miss Universe Governor’s Ball was Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach.
Miss Universe 2016 Contestants Go to Boracay Island
Prior to getting all glammed for the Governor’s Ball, the Miss Universe 2016 candidates showcased their beach bodies in Boracay Island. They were welcomed by locals of Malay as well as government officials. The beauty queens arrived at the Godofredo Ramos Airport in Caticlan.
The contestants experienced dragon boat rowing. The ladies also had a first-hand experience of hand weaving and fishnet making. These are part of the tradition and culture of the indigenous Ati culture.
Meanwhile, contestants felt the warm welcome of the locals in Boracay Island. “This is unbelievable!” Miss Australia Caris Tiivel told CNN Philippines. “All these folks, young and old, turned out to welcome us.” Miss Myanmar meanwhile said, “Boracay is even more exciting and meaningful.” She added that the people are “very friendly and are a very joyful.”
The Miss Universe 2016 contestants previously had a fashion walk at the historical Calle Crisologo in Vigan, Ilocos Sur. The supposed schedule to swim with the sharks in Oslob, Cebu was scrapped from the original itinerary. This after groups protecting the animals and environment claimed this may harm the sharks.
Miss Universe 2016 coronation night with be held at SM Mall of Asia Arena on January 20. The winner will replace the reigning Miss Universe 2015 and Filipina Pia Wurtzbach.
