Arrow season 5 introduced new members of Team Arrow and gave viewers a glimpse of each one’s background. This time, the show will reveal Wild Dog’s tragic backstory.
In the upcoming episode, The CW hit show will make a major revelation about Rene Ramirez’s (Rick Gonzalez) past. Based on the official synopsis of the episode, titled Spectre of the Gun, the series will depart from the usual Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) flashbacks. Instead, it will feature a look at Rene before he became the Wild Dog.
The episode will start with an attack at the City Hall which will trigger painful memories for Rene. Oliver must deal with the person behind the attack and realizes he must face this as Mayor Queen, not as the Green Arrow. Meanwhile, tensions run high in the Arrow bunker, ComicBook noted.
Who is Rene Ramirez (a.k.a. Wild Dog)
Wild Dog’s real name in the original DC comics is not Rene Ramirez. It is Jack Wheeler.
The character first appeared in Wild Dog #1 in 1987. He is one of the first new superheroes created after Crisis on Infinite Earths. Wild Dog is described as having superpowers in guns.
Wheeler went to college on a football scholarship. He was a star player before he had to drop out after an injury forced him off the team and he couldn’t afford tuition.
He eventually enlisted in the U.S. Marines and during a tour of duty, he witnessed some of his friends killed by a terrorist bomb. After returning home, he worked as a mechanic and fell in love.
However, his fiancée–Claire Smith–was gunned down in a seemingly random shooting. It was later revealed that Claire was targeted because her father was a reputed mob boss.
Wheeler snapped after the series of tragedies in his life and became Wild Dog, a reckless young vigilante. Wild Dog is beloved by the public for “cleaning up the streets” but wanted by the police for his brutality.
The character first appeared in Arrow season 5’s premiere episode. The Green Arrow ordered him to stop his vigilante work, but Wild Dog has been persistent. The Green Arrow eventually took Rene under his wing and trained him alongside other new members of the team.
Catch the Spectre of the Gun episode on February 15. Arrow season 5 airs every Wednesday at 8 p.m. in The CW.
