The Philippine embassy in the U.S. has filed a protest to CBS against the upcoming Madam Secretary season 3 episode 15. The complaint stems from the show’s negative depiction of the Philippine president.

In a sneak peek released by CBS for the episode titled Break in Diplomacy, Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord (Tea Leoni) punches the Philippine leader in the face, leaving his face bloodied. It appears Elizabeth reacted harshly when the president made sexual advances on her. The Secretary of State expresses concern that she might fail to save an important treaty at the end of the trailer.

In the CBS’ description of the episode, the character Datu Andrada (Joel de la Fuente) is described as the “Philippine’s unconventional new president.”

The Philippine embassy took offense at the episode and strongly protested what it called a “highly negative depiction” of the country’s leader. The embassy statement reads:

“While Madam Secretary is a work of fiction, it tracks and mirrors current events. It is, therefore, inevitable that its depiction of world leaders will have an impact on how its audience views the real personages and the countries they represent.”

Meanwhile, Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella said they recognize that Madam Secretary is a fictional show. However, Abella said it should have used a fictional US president instead of a fictional Philippine leader, GMA News reported.

“I think they are confusing their images. I think they are projecting something that they really would like to say about their own situation. Really, I think they should use a fictional US president.”

CBS has yet to issue a statement about the protest. The American political drama is created by Barbara Hall and executive produced by Lori McCreary and award-winning actor Morgan Freeman.
