Legion season 1, Marvel’s new television series on FX, is about to premiere this week. Its showrunners however assured that it will not be just your usual superhero show.
The Legion television series is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Yet, executive producer Lauren Shuler Donner said fans should not expect to see familiar characters from the X-Men franchise such as Wolverine. “We want to be very, very different. There’s no way that anybody would watch ‘Legion’ and go, ‘Ugh, I saw that already,” she told New York Times.
In October 2016, the show’s panel was asked during the New York Comic-Con if a Professor X connection would be teased over the course of the show. “I don’t think you can really tell the story without that element to it. There’s a wheelchair in the first scene,” creator Noah Hawley replied.
What We Know So Far About Legion Season 1
Legion follows the life of David Haller (Dan Stevens), the mutant son of Charles Xavier, a.k.a. Professor X. David was diagnosed with schizophrenia at a young age. He will later discover that he possesses telepathy and telekinesis abilities.
Hawley revealed to Variety that he created a 160-track playlist to help Stevens understand his character’s mindset. The playlist includes experimental French sound design, people screaming into bins, and Pink Floyd music.
For his part, the Downton Abbey actor did extensive research on mental health to prepare for the role. Stevens had talked to both schizophrenic patients and doctors.
In the Legion’s storyline, David will meet a girl, Syd Barrett (Rachel Keller), in a psychiatric hospital and fall in love with her. Syd has a withdrawn personality because of her abilities. Apparently, she could trade places with somebody by merely touching his skin.
The new TV series also stars Jeremie Harris. The actor will be playing a character named Ptonomy, who is a memory artist. He could remember everything and has the ability to take people back into their own memories. Ptonomy will help David get into his mind.
Other cast members of Legion are Jean Smart, Aubrey Plaza, and Amber Midthunder. Katie Aselton and Bill Irwin will appear in the series.
Meanwhile, Pink Floyd’s music will also have an important influence on the series. For one, Keller’s character is named after the rock band’s lead singer Roger “Syd” Barrett. Hawley previously said he wanted the show to sound like Pink Floyd’s 1973 album, Dark Side of the Moon.
Legion season 1 will premiere on Wednesday (Feb. 8) at 10 P.M. in FX.
