Olivia Benson has been a household name for 18 years. Now, it looks like the Law & Order: SVU Season 18 lead character is considering retirement or is it the other way around?

In the recent episode of Law & Order: SVU Season 18, Olivia’s (Mariska Hargitay) boyfriend Tucker (Robert John Burke) told her over a romantic dinner that he is planning to retire. The SVU Sergeant was shocked with the idea. Throughout the Next Chapter episode, Benson was struggling with Tucker’s idea of retiring.

The SVU team then investigated a case of a female young professional, Quinn (Annie Monroe), who was sexually assaulted by a masked man she believed to be her college stalker. However, Ray Wilson (Ben Cole) had an airtight alibi and it was eventually disclosed that he was framed.

The team’s investigation revealed that the real perpetrator was retired cop Sgt. Tom Cole (True Blood’s Chris Bauer). With the cops hunting him, he kidnapped Quinn. At the end, Cole revealed his motives of assaulting Quinn. He felt Quinn was ungrateful for all he has done in helping her through the years with her stalker. Cole got the jump on Carisi during the standoff and held him at gunpoint. Benson took down Cole, TV Line notes.

Will This Make Benson Decide to Leave the Police Force?

At the end, Carisi told Benson, “Lieutenant, thank you for helping me out back there. I owe you one. I hope this doesn’t make you want to retire.” Benson replied, “Nope. The exact opposite.” This means fans will still Benson in the upcoming episodes of Law & Order: SVU Season 18.

E! News also notes the publication’s interview with Hargitay in which she reiterates her commitment to the NBC long-running drama, which she also produces.

“I just was actually emailing with Dick [Wolf] today because my heart is so in it and I am so committed. Not only because of the show, but I feel so grateful to be an actor and doing every single day what I love to do. So I feel grateful in that, but also, obviously, how the show has changed lives and how it’s inspired me to start Joyful Heart,” she told E! News.

Law & Order: SVU Season 18 airs every Wednesdays, 9 p.m. on NBC.
