The Late Late Show host James Corden and the stars of Beauty and the Beast hilariously and dangerously brought the Disney live-action adaptation in the crosswalk.
Actors Dan Stevens (the Beast), Josh Gad (LeFou), and Luke Evans (Gaston) joined Corden’s Crosswalk theater company’s production of the classic in the streets of Los Angeles. The performance is the latest edition of the Crosswalk: The Musical on The Late Late Show.
In the production, James Corden played Belle while the three actors reprised their respective roles in the upcoming movie. Since Emma Watson was unavailable, Corden cast himself as Belle. Before they start the street musical production, Corden said:
“Daniel Day Lewis played Abraham Lincoln, Meryl Streep played Margaret Thatcher, James Corden played Belle. I think in many ways those three will always be regarded as similar – if not the same.”
At first, Stevens, Evans, and Gad gushed on how excited they are to perform in front of a live audience. Gad even quipped that to be invited by Corden to perform at the crosswalk is a dream come true. Then Evans and Stevens looked stunned when they found out that their stage would be on the busy Beverly Boulevard and Genesee Avenue, outside CBS.
After their parking lot rehearsal, the show got underway with Corden leading the team in full costume. They step out onto the crosswalk to perform the movie’s musical numbers while the traffic light is red. The group sings and dances while commuters look on. They then make their quick exit to the side street whenever the light changes to green.
The group first belted out Gaston and then Be Our Guest. Since Ewan McGregor was also unavailable, Gad played the part of Lumière. For the finale, Corden arrived in Belle’s flowing golden gown.
Stevens then got nervous and says he can’t do it. Corden, a.k.a. Belle, did all the convincing until Stevens agreed. Belle and the Beast then dance to the film’s famous ballad, Beauty and the Beast, with car horns serving as applause.
Past The Late Late Show’s Crosswalk Musical Performances
This is not the first time that the show pulled off such a performance. According to CBS, Corden and his team previously did Grease, The Lion King, and the Phantom of the Opera.
Corden said their homage to the classic Beauty and the Beast would go down in history as well. He said at the end of their performance:
“People will say, ‘Where were you when the Crosswalk Theater Company performed Beauty and the Beast?’ I’ll say, ‘Well, I was on Beverly and Genesee…running late for the dentist.”
The Late Late Show airs weeknights at 12:37 a.m. in CBS. Meanwhile, the Beauty and The Beast movie will hit theaters in the U.S. on Friday, March 17.
