Fans spent a long and painful wait before they breathed a sigh of relief when MTV finally announced a Scream season 3. However, that joy may not last long as there is a chance the Lakewood 4 may not return on screens.

Deadline first reported that both MTV and Dimension Films plan on giving the Scream TV series a reboot. That would mean a new storyline and a new cast for the series’ third season.

According to the source, the plan is still tentative as both the network and the studio searches for a new showrunner. Nellie Andreeva of Deadline relays:

“…the project is still searching for a new showrunner who would shape the concept for Season 3, but I hear MTV, which just went through a major regime overhaul, remains committed to the series. While the new showrunner may opt to include references to events and characters from the first two seasons, I hear the idea is to start fresh by [re-imagining] the cult title.”

However, although no official statement came from MTV and Dimension, the plan appears solid given that the series’ original stars were allowed to take on other projects.

Potential Track for Scream Season 3

The finale of season 2 dropped the biggest bomb by revealing that Kieran (Amadeus Serafini) is actually the second killer and Piper’s (Amelia Rose Blaire) accomplice/boyfriend. However, before he could kill more people, the second season finale found the character behind bars.

In the last minute of the episode though, Kieran receives a call from someone claiming to be the real Brandon James. This led many to believe that season 3 will explore the possibility of the real Brandon James being alive.

Still, the series managed yet another twist as TV Line reports that the Scream Halloween special decided to kill Kieran. This left the fate of the series uncertain. With MTV looking for a new showrunner, season 3 would most likely have a different approach to the slasher genre.

Furthermore, the series order for the third season only earned a plan for six episodes. This is half the episodes than the second one. Perhaps this could work in Scream‘s favor given that some of the fans’ sentiment point to the slasher genre not being suitable for a long series.

Who are the Lakewood 4?

The Lakewood 6 is a term coined by Noah Foster (John Karna) to describe the group who survived Piper Shaw’s killings in Scream season 1. The group comprises of Noah, Kieran Wilcox, Emma Duval (Willa Fitzgerald), Audrey Jensen (Bex Taylor-Klaus), Brooke Maddox (Carlson Young), and Jake Fitzgerald (Tom Maden).

However, Jake died at the hands of the killer in episode 1 of season 2. Meanwhile, the reveal of Kieran as the second killer, and later on his death, removes him from the list as well.

With the planned reboot, the Lakewood 4 may no longer return for another season. However, according to Deadline’s report, events and characters from seasons 1 and 2 may still get a mention in Scream season 3.
