ABC is about to cast its first black leading lady for the upcoming The Bachelorette 2017. Learn about the full details here.
Rachel Lindsay will be officially announced as the next star of the reality show reportedly on Monday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! Reports started to emerge after The Bachelor creator Mike Fleiss earlier teased on Twitter that they are about to make a “historic announcement” on Kimmel’s show.
This is not the first time the Bachelor Nation has decided to spoil the result of its show. In August 2016, ABC announced that Nick will be the next star of The Bachelor, even though he was still appearing on Bachelor in Paradise season 3.
The ABC franchise has been slammed for years for its lack of diversity. In 2012, two Nashville residents filed a class-action lawsuit against ABC and Warner Horizon Television, Yahoo News noted. They are claiming that the show violated racial discrimination laws. The lawsuit was dismissed in October 2012.
So far, the Bachelor Nation’s most diverse stars have been Venezuelan soccer player Juan Pablo Galvais in The Bachelor season 18 and The Bachelorette season 12 star JoJo Fletcher, who is half Iranian. The news of Rachel becoming the next leading lady came more than a year after former ABC Entertainment Group President Paul Lee declared that the next Bachelor or Bachelorette may finally be non-white.
Who is The Bachelorette 2017 Star Rachel Lindsay
Rachel became one of the front runners of the show. She also made history for being the first black woman to get the first impression rose.
She is a 31-year-old African-American lawyer from Dallas, Texas and also a Cowboys fan. Rachel graduated from Marquette University Law School. She worked as a legal intern for the Milwaukee Bucks and currently a civil litigation attorney in a law firm.
In her Bachelor bio, Rachel explained why an accomplished lawyer would leave everything behind to be on the show. She said she regrets “focusing too much on my career.”
Rachel was also asked who she would like to be for just one day. She replied, “Michelle Obama. She’s everything!” Her favorite artist is Jean-Michel Basquiat.
The Bachelor 2016 Ben Higgins believes Rachel could be the next The Bachelorette 2017 star. In a tweet earlier this year, Lauren Bushnell’s fiancé said, “Rachel will either be with @viallnicholas28 in the end or she will be the next #bachelorette #TheBachelor.”
The Bachelor 2017 airs Mondays at 8 p.m. in ABC. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
