Consistent to his character Jon Snow, Kit Harington recently shared that he doesn’t know anything about what awaits the series’ characters come Game of Thrones season 8. The actor shared how the non-existence of a source material leaves the final season a complete mystery.
Speaking to an interview with MovieFone, Harington shared his thoughts about spending a number of years with the character. Consequently, he also detailed how it felt going in “uncharted territory” knowing that seasons seven and eight won’t be based on an actual George R.R. Martin book. Harington told the source:
“It’s just amazing, in some ways, having no book to go on, because the scripts come through and you’re completely in the dark about what they’re going to do. Believe me, I just finished Season Seven, and I am already counting down the days until I get the Season Eight scripts.
Everyone’s been wondering how it’s going to end, and what’s going to happen right from the get-go, and theorizing about it. It’s really exciting to me not knowing, genuinely having no idea where it’s going to end…”
Loyal fans of the series know that creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss anticipated that GoT may catch up with Martin’s publication of the remaining books in the series. Hence, they sat down with the author to discuss the potential ending to A Song of Ice and Fire.
Both creators spoke to Vanity Fair for an article back in 2014. That time, Benioff and Weiss revealed that they already know how ASOIF ends. Benioff told the outlet:
“Last year we went out to Santa Fe for a week to sit down with him [Martin] and just talk through where things are going, because we don’t know if we are going to catch up and where exactly that would be. If you know the ending, then you can lay the groundwork for it. And so we want to know how everything ends. We want to be able to set things up. So we just sat down with him and literally went through every character.”
Based on the characters who survived on the show so far, it appears fan favorites Jon Snow, Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) could make it as far as season 8. The show’s end game could give fundamental roles to these characters.
Game of Thrones Season 8
Earlier this month, people behind the show finally confirmed that season 8 will have a very brief run with six episodes. This is one episode shorter than season 7.
Given the shorter season, it is likely that the Great War teased in the early promotional videos will happen soon. This could either take place at the very end of season 7 or at the beginning of season 8.
At this point though, fans may wonder what the Great War really is. The contention at this point is it will be about humankind fighting the army of the undead or the White Walkers.
