John Wick 2 may not debut in theaters until next week, but recent news could serve as an early present for fans. Reports suggest that a TV series based on the movie could happen.

Comments about this potential extended narrative comes straight from Chad Stahelski. Speaking to /Film, the director explained how they originally planned for John Wick 2 to be a prequel. Nevertheless, he and other people involved behind the movie thought it didn’t feel right.

The source quotes Stahelski as saying, “We basically almost have a prequel written, but we’d save that for other aspects of the property. Lionsgate is very interested in doing a John Wick TV show, and that seems very appealing to us, to give those creative ideas to that entity, because I think in TV you could really expand on what that is, and greater than we could in just a two-hour film.”

The director added that aside from their intended prequel idea, other impossible task concepts they came across with could also translate well in television. With both the creative team and the studio on board, it would not be hard to secure official development for the change in platform.

What a John Wick TV Series Could Explore

According to Screen Rant, John Wick‘s universe is rich in ideas that can be explored in a TV series. One of these is the protagonist’s (Keanu Reeves) time as an assassin.

Fans of the 2014 film only met the John Wick who got over his previous job as an assassin. The movie implies that Wick changed for the better after marrying the love of his life. Hence, it would be interesting to see a younger version of the character who was more than willing to kill people for money.

Another possibility that Screen Rant offers involves the arrival of characters who would not let John retire from his assassin career. With this, a series based on the movie could take on crime procedural format.

Looking Back at the Original Movie

John Wick turned out to be a commercial and critical success. Moviegoers who transitioned to becoming fans of the film were captivated by its no-nonsense and simple formula.

The film introduced John Wick as a grieving man who recently lost his wife. Days after her death, a puppy arrives at his doorstep. It was his late wife’s way of looking out for John, thinking he should not grieve alone.

However, an encounter with Russian gang members results in a home invasion and the death of John Wick’s puppy. The film then follows John as he seeks revenge for his new friend.

The ex-assassin’s story continues with John Wick: Chapter 2. It releases in theaters on February 10.
