James Van Der Beek is set to feature in Viceland’s comedy scripted series called What Would Diplo Do? Though it is still a working title, he will also be the writer and the show’s executive producer. He will be working with another EP, Grammy Award winning artist DJ Diplo.
This series is a joint production between Vice Media, the one running the Viceland, and the company A+E networks. They ordered six episodes of What Would Diplo Do? Aside from James Van Der Beek and Diplo, the latter’s longtime manager named Kevin Kusatsu will also join as executive producer. Alongside them is also Diplo’s music video expert, Brandon Dermer.
What Would Diplo Do Details
Meanwhile, Van Der Beek will not only serve as EP but the series’ showrunner. The comedy series is expected to premiere in late 2017. Synopsis says:
“Louie meets WorldStar HipHop crossed with This Is Spinal Tap, Van Der Beek plays a fictional version of DJ superstar Diplo in a collection of parables about life as told through the eyes of guy who can bring 60,000 people to their feet… but kind of sucks one-on-one.”
The Dawson’s Creek starrer explained that WWDD itself does not take things seriously. Despite this, the show never intends to be cynical as well. According to Deadline, this six-episode series was derived from A Day in the Life.
It is an online promo concert for Diplo’s Mad Decent Black Party which was released last year. The said promo also featured Van Der Beek together with the same creative team. “I’ve enjoyed deconstructing my own image quite a bit over the years,” says the actor.
James Van Der Beek on WWDD
In addition, Van Der Beek, who is also known for starring in the ABC series Don’t Trust B, is nothing but grateful to do this project with Diplo. After all, he believes that not many people would have the guts to give a ‘fun and ridiculous’ series like WWDD a chance.
Moreover, Spike Jonze, Viceland co-president is the one who shepherds the series. He is an Oscar-winning filmmaker and is currently tasked to oversee the programs in the network. Furthermore, let us watch out how What Would Diplo Do? plays out.
