The History drama Six has been renewed for season 2. The announcement happens ahead of its season finale on March 8.
Season two will consist of 10 episodes, which is an addition of two more episodes from its first season. Production of the second installment will begin in the summer for a possible 2018 debut.
The History drama is inspired by the real missions of Navy SEAL Team Six. It follows the members of U.S. Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU), more commonly known as SEAL Team Six.
Initially, the team’s covert mission is to eliminate a Taliban leader in Afghanistan but it goes awry when they uncover a U.S. citizen working with terrorists. Two years after, troop leader Richard ‘Rip’ Taggart (Walton Goggins) disbanded his team and works as a private security contractor in Nigeria helping to protect an all-girls school.
Terrorist organization Boko Haram then captured him. Now, his former SEAL Team Six members Joe “Bear” Graves (Barry Sloane), Alex Caulder (Kyle Schmid), and Ricky “Buddha” Ortiz (Juan Pablo Raba) have to put their differences aside to rescue him from the terror group.
The show also stars Edwin Hodge, Dominic Adams, Nadine Velazquez, Brianne Davis, Jaylen Moore, Donny Boaz, and Nondumiso Tembe. Joe Manganiello was originally cast to play the role of Rip Taggart. The actor left the series in April 2016 due to health issues.
In January, writer and executive producer William Broyles defended the casting of Goggins during the Television Critics Association winter press tour, The Hollywood Reporter noted.
“It was a different style of actor, so we were able to adjust and take the series in some different places that we might have with Joe. We’re very happy with it,” he said.
Deadline noted that Six follows the breakout success of USA Network’s new drama Shooter. The show about a former Marine was also renewed for season 2.
History Drama Six Season 1 Episode 7 Preview
In the upcoming episode titled, Blood Brothers, Buddha will explain to Bear why Rip wanted the latter to be the team leader. Buddha tells him that Rip knew that he has a family that he cares about and Rip thinks it will weigh on him. In a teaser for episode 7, Buddha is seen telling Bear:
“Out of 100 men, 10 shouldn’t be in combat, 80 are just target. Nine are real fighters, but one … one is a warrior. And he will bring the others back. You are the one Joe. You will bring us home and you will bring Rip and those girls back. That is why you are team leader, brother.”
In another sneak peek, Emir Hatim Al-Muttaqi (Jarreth Merz) tells Rip that he begins the negotiations for his release. It will involve the release of some jihadis from Guantanamo, among others.
In the previous episode, Rip was forced to admit his “war crimes” on live television. He admitted killing an unarmed American in an operation to hunt down a terrorist in Afghanistan.
