The Gerald’s Game movie planned for Netflix is still in production. However, Stephen King–the author of the adaptation’s source material–already had a first look of the film.
A report from Dread Central details that King saw the film himself. Consequently, the author aired his review on Twitter. The source quoted the Master of Horror as saying:
“Saw a rough cut of Mike Flanagan’s GERALD’S GAME yesterday. Horrifying, hypnotic, terrific. It’s gonna freak you out.”
Given that the film earned the seal of approval of the source material’s scribe, it is safe to assume that fans will love the adaptation as well. Nevertheless, it is also worth noting that King approved adaptations of his other novels which some fans did not like.
Case in point is the Under the Dome series from CBS. The show started not only with strong ratings but critical acclaim as well. However, as the story progressed and the narrative took its own path away from the book, a number of fans felt betrayed.
It even seemed that fans of the show were not readers of the Stephen King novel. In contrast, most of those who were fans of the book chose not to patronize the adaptation.
Setting Apart the Gerald’s Game Movie
Nevertheless, the Gerald’s Game movie differs from Under the Dome in many ways. For instance, the film format will allow the Netflix adaptation to be straightforward with the material. This will also avoid the tendency for the adaptation to veer away from the original content.
Opposed to King’s other works with supernatural elements, the horror in Gerald’s Game stems from the complexities of the human mind. The book’s synopsis reads, via Dread Central:
“Once again, Jessie Burlingame has been talked into submitting to her husband, Gerald’s, kinky sex games—something that she’s frankly had enough of, and they never held much charm for her to begin with. So much for a “romantic getaway” at their secluded summer home. After Jessie is handcuffed to the bedposts—and Gerald crosses a line with his wife—the day ends with deadly consequences.”
Stephen King’s New Novella Goes Back to Castle Rock
Stephen King, meanwhile, has been busy with another work. A report from Blastr details that the author collaborated with Richard Chizmar for a new novella.
The most interesting aspect of the upcoming work points to the author’s return to Castle Rock, Maine. The author has been using the fictional town for many of his works.
At this point, however, not much details are available on the project. There is also no official release date yet on the Gerald’s Game movie from Netflix. Stay tuned for more updates.
