Another Stark may perish in Game of Thrones season 7. This time, Sansa Stark may not live to see the day when the series makes its final run with season 8.
This possibility comes straight from a joke made by Thrones actress Maisie Williams. Williams, who plays Arya Stark in the show, recently left a controversial remark about Sansa saying “She’s dead.”
TVLine reports that the young actress made the comment at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. Williams and co-star Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark in GoT) served as moderators for showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss at the event. When the conversation turned to Turner’s blonde hair, that’s when Williams quipped about the character’s death.
There’s no way to know whether Williams was telling the truth or simply joking. However, one comment left in the TVLine article pondered the statement.
According to a reader going by the handle Wordsmith, it’s quite impossible to read into the young actress’ comment. On one hand, people behind Game of Thrones are very conscious about spoilers. Hence, leaving a comment out in the open like that could be meant as a joke.
However, on the other hand, Wordsmith also thinks the statement could be a truth bomb masked as a joke. Either way, the user surmises that whichever is the truth, the revelation will still be shocking on the show.
Will Sansa Really Die or Make it After Game of Thrones Season 7?
Although this news may cause alarm for fans of the character, there’s no need to panic yet. Another comment by Turner last February seems to contradict Williams’ statement. Speaking at the BAFTAs red carpet, Express quoted Turner as saying:
“We’ve just finished shooting season seven of Thrones, and I’ve got a couple of movies to do before X-Men starts. And then we go on to season eight.”
Based on this statement, it appears Turner will appear in Game of Thrones‘ final season. Some may argue it could only be in flashbacks, but the series is not known to dwell on those. Hence, Sansa is still likely to survive season 7.
Finally, after months of speculation, Game of Thrones showrunners revealed on Sunday the episode count for season 8. It turns out Game of Thrones‘ final season will only have six episodes. This is one episode short of the upcoming season’s seven-episode run.
Game of Thrones season 7 airs on July 16 in HBO.
