Newly revealed details about Jim Broadbent’s character in Game of Thrones season 7 may confirm a fan theory. These tidbits also point to a significant role of the character in the upcoming season.
The actor recently shared information about his character in an interview with ScreenCrush. After initially telling the source he can’t say anything, he eventually admits that he will play an archmaester. Broadbent further describes that he portrays an “old professor character.”
Other aspects of his role that may confirm a fan theory pertain to the other actor he will share most of his scenes with. Broadbent told ScreenCrush that his character spends time with John Bradley’s Sam Tarley. As to why this is significant, the source explains:
“Though Broadbent didn’t confirm his character’s actual name, it seems likely Broadbent’s character is either Maester Marwyn, or a maester of another name who will fill the role of the character from George R.R. Martin’s book series. The last time we saw Sam in Season 6 of the series, he, Gilly, and baby Sam arrived at the Citadel in Oldtown. After passing on a letter from Jon Snow about Sam learning to become a maester, Sam is sent to the library and told to wait to speak to the archmaester.”
News of Broadbent’s casting came to light last August 2016. After the announcement, Broadbent potentially playing Maester Marwyn already made the rounds in fan forums.
Other New Characters for Game of Thrones Season 7
Aside from Broadbent’s role, a lot of other characters will make their way to the new season. Watchers on the Wall relayed back in August a list of characters needed for casting in season 7.
Among the characters listed include a general, a priest, a warrior and a lovely lady, among others. Both the general and priest roles specify an “RP accent.”
According to the source, this requirement usually indicates that the character will appear in King’s Landing. Hence, both the general and the priest may have significant associations with the new Queen Cersei.
Meanwhile, the description for the warrior character requires the actor to be a great fighter and tough-looking. Since physical characteristics require the actor to be white, Watchers on the Wall surmises the character is not part of the Dothraki army. Instead, he could be someone Arya encounters on her journey back to the North or part of an army belonging to the Northern houses.
Finally, the lovely lady part requires full nudity. It also offers a “good speaking part”, suggesting a more significant role. Since physical characteristics is not strict, the source interprets the character may be from Essos or a new location.
