Another Hollywood A-list actor is exploring the television platform. Netflix recently unveiled Brad Pitt War Machine.

The streaming service will feature Pitt as a “rock star” four-star general in its satirical comedy film. The War Machine story revolves around the US war in Afghanistan. Pitt will be playing the role of General Glenn McMahon, a charismatic military general who commanded NATO forces in the country.

The impeccable track of McMahon propelled his appointment as the commander of US military in its war in Afghanistan. However, he was taken down and replaced from his post following a journalist’s exposé.

The character takes inspiration from General Stanley McChrystal. The military official led the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in 2009.

The story of War Machine is inspired by the bestselling book of late American journalist Michael Hastings, Deadline wrote. The book is titled The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan. It details Hastings’ interviews with McChrystal.

According to Netflix, the Brad Pitt War Machine TV film will showcase General McMahon’s determination to win the war once and for all using his radical approach. Netflix wrote:

“The general and his motley staff of commanders and press advisers race across the globe navigating delicate international alliances and troop requests, the charged battlefield of Washington politics, the voracious appetite of the media, and the day-to-day management of the war itself – all the while struggling to stay connected to the lives of men and women out in the field.”

A recent Netflix trailer showed Pitt’s character talking to key personalities involved in planning the war. Another character told him:

“You’re the leader of U.S. forces in Afghanistan and you have spoken to the president once in 70 days.”

War Machine Cast Members

Aside from Pitt, the series also stars Ben Kingsley, Tilda Swinton, Anthony Michael Hall, Topher Grace, Will Poulter, and Jonathan Ing. Lakeith Stanfield, Emory Cohen, John Magaro, RJ Cyler, Alan Ruck, Scoot McNairy, and Meg Tilly also appear in the film.

Netflix first announced the project in June 2015. War Machine comes from Netflix and Pitt’s production company, Plan B Entertainment. Writer-director David Michôd (Animal Kingdom, The Rover) led the project.

This is not the first collaboration between Pitt and Netflix. The actor’s production company also co-produced the streaming service’s The OA.

Brad Pitt War Machine releases in Netflix on May 26.
