Here’s good news for MMORPG fans – a Final Fantasy XIV TV series is about to premiere in April. Read the details about this upcoming project below.
Square Enix announced that it will release a special live action TV miniseries based on a blog of a Final Fantasy XIV player. The show will be the very first live action work from the hit online game, Geek.com noted.
The TV series will feature Japanese actors Ren Osugi and Yudai Chiba. The 65-year-old Osugi often appears in Beat Takeshi films and has won multiple acting recognition throughout his acting career.
Chiba, who will portray the son, is a known Japanese TV personality. The 27-year-old actor is best known for playing Alata (Gosei Red) in Tensou Sentai Goseiger and its movie spin-offs. He will also appear in a number of movies this year including Teiichi’s Country and ReLIFE.
Square Enix is an online gaming company that released the first Final Fantasy XIV for personal computers in September 2010. The company then unveiled an updated version of the game titled Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn after it was slammed by critics. The game was launched on Windows PC and PS3 in August 2013, and then on PS4 a year later.
In June 2015, Square Enix released the first expansion for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, titled Heavensward. The company will release the second expansion, titled Stormblood, on June 20, 2017. Final Fantasy XIV currently has more than six million players worldwide.
The Story Behind The Final Fantasy XIV TV Series
The TV adaptation is officially titled Final Fantasy XIV: Hikari no Otosan, which translates to Father of Light. It follows the story of a father and son who enjoy playing Final Fantasy XIV together.
MTV cited a report by Model Press which relayed the blog origin of the material. The player recounted his relationship with his 60-something year-old father as they bonded while playing the game.
As the lead characters in the story play the game they both enjoy, they learn more about each other. However, both men also hold an important secret. The Father of Light will feature live action scenes as well as in-game scenes to help tell the father and son story, MTV wrote.
The Final Fantasy XIV TV series will premiere on April 16 in the Japanese station MBS. It will also air on April 18 on TBS. It is still uncertain if the series will air with subtitles or if Square Enix is planning a debut in the US.
