Santa Clarita Diet has been a hit. Aside from its fresh storyline, fans are also amazed about how Drew Barrymore plays a zombie character who eats human flesh to survive.
Fans of the TV series might be wondering what Barrymore actually eats while filming. In real life, the 41-year-old star is a vegetarian. Hence, one can only imagine how the crew prepares for the “human flesh” that she needs to devour on set.
The Netflix comedy show’s special prosthetic and make-up expert Christien Tinsley revealed what they do to create the sickening diet of Sheila (Barrymore) and keep it believable. Tinsley admitted to New York Post that it was all gelatinous formula.
“There were so many things you couldn’t use, I would have said let’s get some raw tuna, sushi-grade, and bloody it up and make life easy and it didn’t work that way. We ended up defaulting to gummy bear formula. It’s gelatinous, it’s translucent, we can cast it into food-grade moulds we created to look like meat and visceral tendon, and we could paint them with food dyes,” he said.
Moreover, Tinsley said they also used dyed pasta for the meat while the bloody milkshake Sheila sips is a mixture of blended beetroots and bananas. He also used the red drum blood of Prosthetic Transfer Materials and K.D. 151 fake blood blend for the blood on Barrymore’s face, MoviePilot noted.
The human toes, fingers and hair are all synthetic too. However, the show’s prosthetic master revealed that they actually used real hair in filming but only on the parts of the body that Sheila will not eat. Whew!
Drew Barrymore’s Most Scary Experience in Santa Clarita Diet Filming
Tinsley revealed that they were concerned at first about Barrymore’s dietary requirements. Everything was put to rest, however, at the start of filming. Tinsley said the actress is actually having fun playing the role of a cannibal and not being in the character that viewers have seen her in the past.
Evidently, it is not the food that poses a challenge for Barrymore. It is more of the scene where Sheila needs to grab her meal.
Barrymore recently revealed that a scene in the Netflix show almost cost her life. In the said episode, the actress jumped on a man’s back to kill him. However, she fell off and bumped her head on the concrete while rehearsing the scene.
The actress admitted that she got really scared when it happened. Fortunately, her MRIs and CAT scans were okay and she only suffered a concussion.
The production of the show was shut down while Barrymore was in the hospital. She returned to work after a week and filmed that same scene.
