The Crown season 2 is expected to be more controversial and scandalous as it might feature the alleged Price Philip’s affair.
The Crown creator Peter Morgan hinted that the next season of the award-winning TV series might tackle the speculations that Queen Elizabeth II’s (Claire Foy) husband cheated on her. During a panel to discuss the show, Morgan revealed that season 2 would turn its attention away from the crowned-Queen and instead focus on Prince Philip’s (Matt Smith) “complexity.”
The creator admitted he finds the Prince extraordinarily interesting. Morgan was then asked if season 2 will touch the Duke of Edinburgh’s alleged affairs. Vanity Fair quoted Morgan replying:
“This is a spoiler-free chat! We’re still in the cutting room and making all sorts of changes. Doesn’t everyone in Britain know he had an affair?”
In the late ‘50s, Prince Philip was linked to actress Pat Kirkwood and TV star Katie Boyle. There was also a rumor that he had brought a mysterious woman onto the royal yacht Britannia while on an overseas tour. However, such rumors had been denied.
Morgan remained mum about the storyline of season 2. He, however, confirmed that it will take place during the years of 1956 to 1964.
Meanwhile, Smith said Prince Philip will remain as outspoken and a silent advisor for the Queen to think outside the box in season 2. He told Radio Times:
“What’s interesting about him is that he has always spoken his mind and has never been afraid to say what he thinks and was certainly in the early days a bit of an outsider, a bit of a maverick. And to a certain extent he still is. He has always been a forward thinker. He’s always telling [the Queen] ‘let’s think outside the box’.”
The Crown Season 2 Cast
Foy will still be playing Elizabeth II and Smith will continue to play as Philip in the upcoming season. However, Foy and Smith will be replaced in the succeeding seasons as the story goes into the 20th century.
Morgan earlier confirmed that the main characters will have to be re-cast, as the show goes through the years, to keep the authenticity of their aging.
Meanwhile, Dexter star Michael C. Hall has been cast to play the role of the late US president John F. Kennedy in season 2. Quarry star Jodi Balfour, on the other hand, will portray the former first lady Jackie Kennedy.
Downton Abbey actor Matthew Goode also joins the cast as Princess Margaret’s (Vanessa Kirby) photographer husband, Anthony Armstrong-Jones. The couple tied the knot in 1960 but divorced in 1978 after 18 years of marriage.
The Crown season 2 is expected to premiere in November in Netflix.
