Dr. Reid’s mom returns in Criminal Minds season 12. However, will Jane Lynch’s new series prevent her again from making frequent appearances in the future?
Lynch played Diana Reid, Spencer’s mom, since the beginning of the series. However, later seasons prevented her from guest starring on the show due to scheduling conflicts. Her role in Glee as Coach Sue Sylvester and other commitments took her time from returning to Criminal Minds.
Now, the actress has another project on her hands. Per Deadline, Lynch will take on the role of U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno in Discovery Channel’s upcoming series, Manifesto.
The source describes the upcoming TV outing. “The series tells the story of how the FBI brought down Unabomber Ted Kaczynski (Paul Bettany), one of the most infamous criminal masterminds in the world.”
Meanwhile, TVLine offers a background on Reno. According to the source, she was the first female Attorney General of the United States, serving under President Clinton from 1993 to 2001. She passed away last November.
Lynch’s Criminal Minds season 12 appearance
Nevertheless, despite scheduling conflicts, Lynch appears in Criminal Minds‘ twelfth season. Another article from TVLine details that the actress shows up in the 13th episode.
Showrunner Erica Messer wrote the chapter and revealed that the episode will mark great things for Reid. Kirsten Vangsness, who plays tech analyst Penelope Garcia, also helped in writing the installment.
If indeed a “course-changer”, episode 13 won’t be the first major storyline for Lynch’s character. Back in season 4, Diana and Reid’s father, William were heavily featured in flashbacks. Reid has been having dreams about a murdered boy named Riley Jenkins.
The young Reid finds out later that Riley was his childhood friend and neighbor. When Diana and William realize that the guy stalking their son is Riley’s murderer, they inform the boy’s dad–Lou. This leads Lou to murder Riley’s killer.
It remains to be seen how big Lynch’s role will be this time around. Aside from episode 13, the actress also appears in episode 20 of the season.
Criminal Minds airs every Wednesday at 9 p.m. on CBS. There’s no season 13 renewal yet for the show at this point.
