Dr. Spencer Reid’s life will constantly be in danger as long as he stays in prison, while his BAU team is struggling to keep him safe in the upcoming Criminal Minds season 12 episode 17.
Although Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) found a friend a prison, it seems like Calvin Shaw (Harold Perrineau) couldn’t be trusted too. In a sneak peek for episode 17, Agent Luke Alvez (Adam Rodriguez) is seen meeting with Shaw and warning him about Reid’s safety.
In the previous episode, Shaw was unable to stop an attack on Reid. He successfully transferred the doctor away from the general population until two heavily built inmates beat Reid.
This week, Alvez drops by the prison, not to see Reid but to meet with Shaw. In a teaser for this week’s episode, Alvez is seen warning Shaw that if anything happens to Reid, he will make him suffer.
What made Alvez do such threat? Does he know something about Shaw’s past?
The inmate previously told Reid a story why he is in jail. According to Shaw, he killed his informant to keep their undercover agents safe. Can he also keep Reid safe in prison?
Towards the end of In The Dark episode, a couple of hardened prisoners were seen attacking Reid. Then the FBI agent screams for help.
Criminal Minds executive producer Erica Messer earlier teased that things will get a lot worse for BAU profiler inside the jail. She told TV Guide:
“It pretty much takes us into Episodes 21 and 22, which will kind of act as a two-part finale. This dilemma of Reid’s will get heightened every week until we get to the end of the season.”
Reid is accused of murdering a fellow doctor in Mexico. Unfortunately, the FBI profiler can’t remember anything about the crime except for the fact that there is a third person with him and Dr. Medina when the alleged crime happened.

Aside from finding ways to get Reid out of jail or at least keep him safe in there, the BAU team is also facing another case.
This week, the team will investigate two victims who were killed in drastically different ways in the same city, the International Business Times noted. The unsub seems to have two personalities – a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
In the promo, Rossi (Joe Mantegna) explains that the unsub could be like a Dr. Jekyll in the day and turns into Mr. Hyde at night. BAU Chief Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster) then tells her colleagues that he will strike again at night.
