People who think having a romantic relationship with someone other than a partner is the only form of cheating are mistaken. Secretly watching Netflix shows is now another form of cheating … if one is watching it without his/her spouse.

Netflix revealed that 46 percent of couples worldwide watched at least one of the TV shows ahead of their partner. According to the streaming service, the so-called “Netflix cheating” jumped threefold since the behavior first came into view in 2013.

In addition, 60 percent of consumers said they would likely cheat if they felt they could get away with it. The study also showed that 81 percent of Netflix cheaters are repeat offenders and 44 percent engaged in the act at least three times or more.

Netflix’s study hailed from SurveyMonkey from December 20 to 31 last year which relied on 30,000 total responses. The streaming company said the survey balanced parameters between age and gender. It is also represented by an adult online population, who watches TV shows via streaming services as a couple in various countries.

The respondents came from the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Viewers from other European and Latin American countries were also among those who participated. Meanwhile, couples from Asian countries such as the Philippines, Singapore, India, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and UAE also answered the survey.

The level of deceit varies by country. Apparently, the biggest Netflix cheaters were from Mexico (at 58 percent) and Brazil (at 57 percent). Couples from Netherlands were the least dishonest with only 27 percent.

Netflix Shows That Couples Can’t Wait to Watch

The streaming service revealed that some of their original series were among the top temptations for couples. The lists include Stranger Things, House of Cards, Orange Is The New Black, and Narcos.  Other shows that lure people to watch without their spouses are American Horror Story, The Walking Dead, and Breaking Bad.

The two common denominators of these shows are they are either drama or suspense or in both genres. Narcos and Breaking Bad are both action drama. House of Cards focuses on political spectacle. Stranger Things is science fiction-horror show, while The Walking Dead is a zombie apocalyptic in theme.

American Horror Story is the only anthology in the list. Orange Is The New Black, on the other hand, is the only one with a touch of comedy.

Why do Netflix fans cheat on their streaming partner? Yahoo News noted that it is usually because of “an uncontrollable desire to find out what’s next.”
