Charmed reboot is finally happening, but not all are happy about it.
The CW announces the reboot of the 90s fantasy hit series after months of negotiation. The Charmed reboot comes more than three years after CBS first announced plans to bring back the series.
Jane the Virgin showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman will helm the show. The show’s writers Jessica O’Toole and Amy Rardin are penning the script for the reboot, The Hollywood Reporter notes. The Charmed comeback will be set in 1976, during the early life of the Halliwell sisters.
The original Charmed starred Shannen Doherty, Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano, and Rose McGowan. It ran at WB Network for eight seasons – from 1998-2006. Through the years, it achieved a cult following and broke several viewership records for the network.
However, when the first reboot was announced by CBS in 2013, it did not receive support from Milano and McGowan. McGowan called the planned reboot “lame.”
“They really are running out of ideas in Hollywood.”
“lame lame lame lamertons.”
Milano wrote on Twitter:
“The thing about them doing a #charmed reboot is… it feels like yesterday. It feels too close.”
Combs said on Twitter:
“Here’s the thing. Everything is a reboot. If you think otherwise you haven’t read enough Shakespeare yet. At least they had the decency to call it what it is. Instead of ripping it off and then pretending to not be ripping it off.”
On Twitter, Doherty replied to a fan:
“It’s strange to think about a reboot. I guess I’m still processing the idea.”
The CBS plan did not pass beyond the development stage.
The Charmed Original Cast Reaction on The CW Reboot
Doherty and McGowan have yet to comment on the CW reboot. Combs has tweeted her reaction, saying “We wish them well.” Milano also took to Twitter to praise and thank the Charmed fans. She also shares a throwback image of her days on the show. Milano posted a photo of her and guest star, Billy Zane, on set.
Meanwhile, Charmed fans are also divided on the prospect of the reboot having nothing to do with the original, TV Fanatics notes. Some have expressed on social media that they would prefer a series with the original characters, or at least set in the future with children of the original characters.
The Charmed reboot at a new network will feature new stars as the three witches. The CW has yet to announce the new cast members and the premiere date of the show.
