CBS’ Criminal Minds season 12 is planning something big for the series. Aside from the return of a recurring character, the show will make major changes that will surely excite fans. Here’s what we know so far.
Criminal Minds Season 12 Major Changes
After Thomas Gibson left the show, the ratings of the series reportedly dropped. Though the show is still airing, a lot of fans already stopped watching it. Now, another strategy surfaces to save Criminal Minds.
According to TV Line, executive producer Erica Messer revealed that big changes will affect the show’s structure. Messer explains how the storytelling will be in season 12. “It feels like we’ve earned the right to tell some serialized stories… so we’re running with that, telling a really big arc that will last all of the back 9 [episodes] of Season 12.”
Messer went on to add the reason why they think that a serialized storyline is more accurate. It seems people involved with the show feels positive about the format.
“This big arc that we’re doing has reenergized everybody, like, ‘We can do [a serialized saga].’ If we hadn’t been on as long as we have, with such an amazing fan base who can’t get enough of our character work, this wouldn’t be possible.”
Moreover, the showrunner also added that the series have these people who want to be with the characters. And, this time, with the serialized storytelling, they will take “a journey they’ve never been on before.”
Based on the aforementioned source, Spencer’s (Matthew Gray Gubler) mother Diana Reid (Jane Lynch) returns on Criminal Minds season 12. Her character will appear in episode 11 titled Surface Tension.
According to Buddy TV, her comeback serves an important role for the “real” major changes of the series. The said story arc will start in episode 13 titled Spencer. The episode is written by Messer and Kirsten Vangness.
