Big Little Lies star Iain Armitage is being eyed to play the young Sheldon Cooper in the upcoming Big Bang Theory spinoff. Although CBS and Warner Bros. Television haven’t issued a statement about its casting, reports indicate that talks are already ongoing for the major roles.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Armitage is currently the frontrunner to portray young Sheldon (Jim Parsons) in the planned TBBT spinoff. Armitage currently stars in HBO’s Big Little Lies as Jane Chapman’s (Shailene Woodley) son. He also appeared in Law and Order SVU and on Steve Harvey’s kids’ competition show Little Big Shots in NBC.
During the 2017 Screen Actors Guild Awards, Parsons admitted that they have already picked a lead star that would play young Sheldon. He, however, refused to name the young actor but said he is a wonderful kid. He also revealed that Big Bang Theory showrunners Chuck Lorre and Steve Molaro led the audition and they asked his opinion.
Aside from Armitage, EW reported that Zoe Perry is also in talks to play Sheldon’s mother, Mary Cooper. In the current Big Bang Theory series, Laurie Metcalf plays the character. Metcalf has received an Emmy nomination for her portrayal as Sheldon’s God-fearing mom.
Variety cited sources saying CBS and Warner Bros. also have a frontrunner to play Sheldon’s father. However, no deal has been finalized as of yet.
What We Know So Far About The Big Bang Theory Spinoff
The current cast members of the CBS hit comedy show will not be involved in the prequel except for Parsons. The actor will serve as executive producer of the show along with other TBBT showrunners Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady, and Steve Molaro.
The Big Bang Theory spinoff doesn’t have an official pilot yet. However, it is expected to have 13 episodes in season 1.
The story will focus on Sheldon’s childhood in Texas. In several episodes of TBBT, Sheldon mentioned his mother, brother, and fraternal twin sister. He also opened up about his father recently.
When he and girlfriend Amy (Mayim Bialik) had an argument about their cohabitation agreement, Sheldon revealed to Penny (Kaley Cuoco) that he walked in on his father cheating. This was the reason behind his three knocks on any door.
The Big Bang Theory season 10 currently airs every Thursday at 8 p.m. in CBS. The show is yet to be renewed for season 11. The cast members are presently negotiating for their new contracts.
The five original cast members – Parsons, Cuoco, Johnny Galecki (Leonard), Simon Helberg (Howard), and Kunal Nayyar (Raj) reportedly agreed to a pay cut to give co-stars Bialik and Melissa Rauch (Bernadette) a salary increase.
