The Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons will play the role of a father of a transgender kid in a new movie. Learn the details of the star’s new gig here.
Both Emmy-winners Parsons and Homeland’s Claire Danes are set to be featured as a married couple in the upcoming drama, A Kid Like Jake. The film is based on New York’s Lincoln Center Theater play in 2013 of the same title.
The story revolves around a couple who is trying to raise a 4-year-old-son who prefers to dress up as a girl. In the story, Alex and Greg try to find the right kindergarten for their young child.
Jake is a leading candidate for enrollment in one of the top kindergarten programs in New York City. However, when he shows his passion for Cinderella and started to dress-up, these caused concern to them.
Variety noted the timing of the movie is perfect especially now that the rights of transgender youth in the United States are in the spotlight. US President Donald Trump is currently being slammed for rolling back a policy passed under former President Barack Obama’s administration. It allows transgender schoolchildren to use public school bathrooms corresponding with their gender identity.
This is the first major lead role for Jim Parsons in a movie. He recently appeared in supporting roles in Hidden Figures and the HBO AIDS crisis drama The Normal Heart.
Aside from starring in the movie, Parsons will also serve as producer along with Todd Spiewak and Eric Norsoph. Double Nickel is the executive producer.
Silas Howard (Transparent) is set to helm the movie. Howard is one of only a few transgender directors in Hollywood. Daniel Pearle who penned the original stage play will also write the screenplay for the big screen.
A Kid Like Jake follows recent transgender-focused films such as Eddie Redmayne’s The Danish Girl in 2016. No release date exists yet for the film.
The Big Bang Theory Season 11 Update
The CBS hit comedy is yet to be renewed for season 11. CBS Corporation chairman-CEO Leslie Moonves, however, remains optimistic that TBBT season 11 will be announced very soon.
The salary negotiation between CBS, Warner Bros., and the major cast members of the show is still ongoing. Moonves, however, said CBS is “very, very close” to order not only one but two more seasons of the show.
Aside from Jim Parsons, the contracts of his co-stars Johnny Galecki (Leonard), Kaley Cuoco (Penny), Simon Helberg (Howard), and Kunal Nayyar (Raj) will also expire at the end of the current season. Currently, Parsons, Galecki, and Cuoco have $1million per episode contract each. Helberg and Nayyar, on the other hand, are reportedly in the $750,000 salary range.
The Hollywood Reporter cited sources saying when the five stars sign their new contracts, all of them will be in the same salary range. This means Parsons, Galecki, and Cuoco would remain in their old per episode salary while Helberg and Nayyar will receive a salary increase.
