CBS has made it official and gave a green light to The Big Bang Theory spinoff. The network has ordered the prequel straight to series for the 2017-2018 season. The announcement comes ahead of the renewal of CBS’ top comedy, The Big Bang Theory.
Iain Armitage (Big Little Lies) has been cast to play the lead role as the young Sheldon Cooper. The adult character is being portrayed by Jim Parsons in TBBT.
Zoe Perry (Private Practice) will be Sheldon’s mother, Mary, who is an overtly devout Christian. The character is played by Perry’s real-life mother, Laurie Metcalfe in TBBT.
Raegan Revord (Modern Family) and Montana Jordan (The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter ) will portray Sheldon’s siblings. Jordan will be his older brother, George Jr., while Revord will be Sheldon’s fraternal twin sister Missy.
Meanwhile, Lance Barber (Faking It) will portray Sheldon’s alcoholic father. George Sr. has yet to appear in TBBT and Sheldon rarely talked about him. In an episode of season 10 however, Sheldon made some revelations about his father.
The Big Bang Theory Spinoff Details
The spinoff is officially titled Young Sheldon. It will focus on the Cooper family particularly on Sheldon’s childhood. The story will begin when the Caltech genius is 9 years old. He lives with his family in Galveston, Texas and about to enter high school.
Young Sheldon hails from Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre and executive producer Steven Molaro. Lorre’s co-creator Bill Prady is not attached to the prequel. Jon Favreau will direct and executive produce the pilot.
The series will be narrated by Parsons as adult Sheldon. Young Sheldon is described as Malcolm in the Middle with just a young Sheldon.
The Big Bang Theory spinoff will be a single-camera series, unlike the original series’ multicamera setup. An episode count has not yet been determined. No premiere date has been announced as well.
Meanwhile, The Big Bang Theory is still waiting for renewal while new contracts for stars Mayim Bialik (Amy) and Melissa Rauch (Bernadette) are yet to be signed. Consequently, reports indicated that the five other stars of the show–Parsons, Johnny Galecki (Leonard), Kaley Cuoco (Penny), Kunal Nayyar (Raj), and Simon Helberg (Howard)–offered to take a pay cut to give the two a salary bump.
CBS CEO Leslie Moonves earlier said they are “very very close” to renew TBBT for two more seasons. The Big Bang Theory season 10 currently airs every Thursday at 8 p.m. in CBS.
