The Big Bang Theory season 10 has garnered a cult following. However, it seems only recently that audiences noticed something odd about one of its main characters.
The odd tidbit? Leonard Hofstadter’s glasses do not have lenses! Johnny Galecki confirmed that the glasses he has been using in the show do not have lenses from the very start. The actor made the admission while promoting his new horror flick, Rings.
“We rehearsed the first episode for about a week and a half, and when we started to shoot, they said, ‘Well, you’re gonna take your glasses off, right?’ I said, ‘No, I want Leonard to wear glasses.’ They said, ‘Oh, we just thought you were wearing them as Johnny for rehearsal all week,'” Galecki told AOL’s Build.
The actor revealed that he is using lens-free glasses because lenses would reflect the set lights especially during scenes with Jim Parsons (Sheldon Cooper), who is much taller than him. Parsons is 6-foot-1 inch tall while Galecki is 5-foot-5 inches in height.
However, the lens-free glasses do not always work out well for Galecki. He mentioned a time when everyone laughed at him after he accidentally put his finger through the empty frame and scratched his eye. “That kind of killed the moment,” said Galecki.
Leonard Hofstadter Without His Glasses
The four male geniuses of The Big Bang Theory season 10 have their respective signature. Sheldon has his superhero-inspired shirts. Howard (Simon Helberg) loves his tight black pants and turtleneck shirts. As for Raj (Kunal Nayyar), he frequently wears knitted clothes under his jacket.
It is the black-framed eyewear that has been Leonard’s signature since the CBS hit show premiered in 2008. One of the most notable episodes where the importance of Leonard’s glasses was pointed out was in season 1. In episode 11, titled The Pancake Anomaly, Sheldon became sick.
Leonard and the guys decided to hide from him and have a Planet of the Apes series marathon instead, leaving Penny (Kaley Cuoco) to take care of Sheldon. However, Leonard breaks his glasses at the movie theater. He needed to return to his apartment and retrieve his backup glasses.
In order to avoid detection by Sheldon and Penny, Howard and Raj helped Leonard navigate through the living room by using a helmet camera. Penny eventually catches him and sticks him with Sheldon. As he tries to escape from Sheldon, he runs into a wall and nearly knocks himself out.
In the end, Leonard and Sheldon sit injured and sick on the couch. Check out the scene from The Pancake Anomaly episode here. The Big Bang Theory season 10 airs every Thursday at 8 p.m. in CBS.
