Norman deals with his mother’s death in a very creepy way when Bates Motel season 5 premiere airs on Monday. Check out what’s in store for the upcoming episode.
In the previous season finale, Norman (Freddie Highmore) killed his mother, Norma (Vera Farmiga). Season 5 will pick up nearly two years after her death.
Norman tries to appear as a happy and well-adjusted motel owner. However, he struggles at home as his violent blackouts continue to escalate and the “Mother” threatens to take over his mind completely. He will be living in multiple realities in season 5.
Meanwhile, Rihanna will appear this season as Marion Crane. The iconic character was first played in Psycho by Janet Leigh. The Work singer will appear in multiple episodes.
On the other hand, Sheriff Alex Romero (Nestor Carbonell) still blames Norman for the death of Norma. He is in prison for perjury when the Bates Motel season 5 premiere airs but the former sheriff still seeks revenge against his stepson.
Norma’s brother Caleb (Kenny Johnson) also comes to town and will disturb Norman’s life. Meanwhile, Norman’s half-brother Dylan (Max Thierot) and Emma (Olivia Cooke) will also appear in season 5.
Newcomers in White Pine Bay will also threaten Norman’s life. He will fantasize on married business owner Madeleine Loomis (Isabelle McNally), who has a striking resemblance to his mother. Norman will also meet the new sheriff in town–Dana Greene (Brooke Smith), USA Today noted.
What to Expect in Bates Motel Season 5
Showrunner Kerry Ehrin teased that the final season of the A&E drama will be darker and more tragic than the previous season. She told Entertainment Weekly:
“It’s definitely darker … The reality of it — the arch version of it is he’s crazy and he misses his mother, but when you imagine day-to-day life and what that means, it definitely lends itself to a certain humor that the show balances really well.”
When asked if the TV series will follow the 1960’s movie Psycho, Ehrin said Bates Motel will definitely do something different. She emphasizes that Bates Motel will be its own thing. Ehrin further detailed that it was “utterly irrelevant to just stick to the Psycho lore.”
The showrunner also refused to confirm if they will show the infamous shower scene of Marion this season. In Alfred Hitchcock’s psychological horror film, Marion was killed while she is taking a shower.
Norman murdered her while under the control of an alternate personality. It seems like when Norman felt attracted to Marion, the “Mother” personality became jealous and killed her.
Ehrin was also asked whether the series will have a conclusion like in Psycho. She hinted that Bates Motel will be having its own version for its ending. Norman was institutionalized at end of the movie.
The Bates Motel season 5 premiere airs on Monday, February 20. Catch it at 10 p.m. in A&E.
