Bad news for Lady Gaga fans. The Joanne hitmaker will not be playing Donatella Versace in American Crime Story season 3.
Show creator Ryan Murphy has confirmed that he is not eyeing Gaga to portray Donatella. The Bad Romance singer and Murphy have worked together in a couple seasons of American Horror Story. Gaga played a major role in American Horror Story: Hotel, wherein she won a Golden Globe award.
ACS season 3 will feature the death of the famous fashion designer Gianni Versace. In 1997, he was shot to death on the steps of his home in Miami, Florida. Versace’s murder led to a manhunt for Andrew Cunanan, who also killed four others in a cross-country shooting spree over several months. Cunanan committed suicide eight days after Versace’s murder.
Reports that Lady Gaga would be playing Donatella Versace first emerged in November 2016. Gaga’s post on social media last month further heightened the speculation that she will portray the character in ACS. In her post, Gaga was seen holding a new book of Donatella.
Why Murphy Will Not Cast Gaga in American Crime Story Season 3
Murphy has been very vocal on how he admires Gaga. The TV series producer said that he would love to work with the singer but also revealed that she will not be part of ACS because of her very busy schedule this year, Variety reported.
He explained, “She’s very busy this next year. She’s doing Super Bowl and then she’s doing ‘A Star Is Born’ and I believe that she’s going on tour. And when you’re going to do a show like Versace, it’s a five-month commitment, it’s a very big show, we’re shooting it all over the world. So I just don’t think with her schedule, I knew that it would never had worked.” When asked if there was ever a talk with the Born This Way singer to play Donatella, Murphy replied, “Not really.”
Details for the third installment of FX show remain under wrap except for the title which is Versace/Cunanan: American Crime Story. It will be based on the book Vulgar Favors by Vanity Fair writer Maureen Orth.
ACS season 2 will be about Hurricane Katrina. FX CEO John Landgraf has said during the Television Critics Association winter press tour that the two seasons will air about six months apart from each other. He, however, said that the American Crime Story Versace story will be filmed first.
