The ABC’s family sitcom deals with an Asian American family who migrated in the United States. The story follows the lives of Asian characters of Jessica and Louis Huang. The couple has three children. The family deals with the Americans that is culturally different with where they grew up in.
The show is also adapted from Eddie Huang’s autobiography book Fresh Off the Boat: A Memoir.
Fresh Off the Boat tackles citizenship, a report from Paste magazine said. The report said the show is effective on showing citizenship as a negotiation of self-interest as well as commonweal.
The ABC show also gives criticism about the American government using the softness of the family sitcom.
