A Dog’s Purpose is a film directed by Lasse Hallstrom featuring Josh Gad as one of the main actors. Recently, a disturbing video forcing a dog into gushing water made both of them react on social media.
According to Deadline, a video was released by TMZ showing a terrified German shepherd. The clip showed the dog clawing out of a handler’s grasp. Still, despite actions of protest, the dog was still forced into the water.
Meanwhile, a second part of the video showed that the dog eventually got in, but consequently struggled and failed to surface. People in the surrounding area were then heard screaming “Cut it! Cut it!” before handlers rushed to get the dog out.
Per the TMZ report, the production recreated a river by using 8 outboard motors. The source detailed that it’s not clear whether the dog’s submergence was part of the script or not.
Moreover, Birds & Animals Unlimited was the one who provided the handler and dog in the video. In line with this, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) shared that they have been onto exposing them for a while.
Amblin Entertainment did not comment on the seemingly disturbing content of the video. Instead, they released the following statement.
“Amblin production team followed rigorous protocols to foster an ethical and safe environment for the animals. While we continue to review the circumstances shown in the edited footage, Amblin is confident that great care and concern was shown for the German Shepherd Hercules, as well as for all of the other dogs featured throughout the production of the film.”
Hallstrom and Gad on A Dog’s Purpose
The film’s 70-year-old director shared that he was disturbed by the video and was not aware of the said actions. Hallstrom added that an investigation will be conducted to punish whoever is responsible.
On the other hand, Gad also expressed his thoughts on Facebook:
The 35-year-old actor supports PETA, a nonprofit organization that now calls to boycott the film, Cinema Blend reported. It remains to be seen how the investigation on the matter turns out.
A Dog’s Purpose was based on the 2010 novel of the same name by W. Bruce Cameron. The film releases this January 27.
